About Aris Kafantogias

Aris Kafantogias is a PhD candidate and former university assistant (Universtitätsassistent praedoc) at the Department of Economic and Social History (2018-2023) at the University of Vienna, Austria. He received his Master of Arts degree with distinction in European History from the University of Athens, Greece. His doctoral research focuses on the material culture and consumption of clothes and textiles in Vienna, 1760-1825. He is Member of the Working Group: “Materielle Kultur und Konsum in der Vormoderne”, and he has multiple publications on the subject. Among others with Firenze University Press and Österreichische Zeitschrift für Geschichteswissenschaften.

What women should wear was intensely debated in early 19th century Vienna. The city’s dressmakers strove to advertise their products and establish a consumer base for them. Thus, in 1816 Johann Schickh founded the first Viennese fashion magazine to promote a ‘Viennese fashion’, women should follow.
